Tesla closed above $2000 a share today, with a market cap now approaching $400B. So, they must be growing like crazy, right?
Topline (which everybody seems to point to as a proof point on ‘growth’) was up 14% from 2018 to 2019. They are on track for 2020 to be up less than 5% from 2019 to 2020, unless the business explodes in the last quarter of the year.
It’s hard to see how the growth rate isn’t substantially lower in 2020, if they grow at all. What am I missing?

You’re forgetting about cultism.

Heh. Soon they’ll be adding that to “the balance sheet” analysis classes at Harvard Business School..
“Well in evaluating the Assets section of the Balance Sheet we have the following components-
Inventory
Plants and Equipment
Accounts Receivable
Cash and Cash Equivalents
Goodwill
Crazy Valuation Adders From Cult Fanaticism”

And it’s not like they use GAAP anyway, so it all just kind of works out.

“hey, we use GAAP! ....
.... Martian GAAP!”

Panel GAAPs you can see from Mars?

Yo
u might think that I am part of the Tesla cult, but
I can’t explain the share price, so I don’t own any.

I was never “short” but I have paid my dues in other ways... and concluded that it doesn’t matter what the financials say— those guys will buy and buy and buy it.
I still contend that’s really scary, given that IF two hundred billion dollars disappears out of investor portfolios? There’s always a knock on effect in other equities and other sectors. If TESLA sneezes we could all catch pneumonia from the resulting contagion.

It’s up big again this morning.
So it’s now trading 15X best-case REVENUES forward looking, with virtually no growth. At least back in the internet bubble you could extrapolate out a few years, on a known growth rate, to justify the price. But, here? I’m not following the logic.

They lose money on every sale, but make up for it with volume. Maybe hoping for some more trickle down tax incentives.
I have to give credit, pedo-accuser did it right when mobilizing a cult - they aren’t just slavishly devoted, they have (too much) money.

No matter how many stars you get, this is an underrated comment.

Beat me to it. I was going to say Cultism is now accounted for in accounting goodwill.
Signed,
A Disappointed Model 3 Owner with No Position in TSLA shares.

The TSLA owners seem happier than the Tesla owners...

I sure as hell would be. The company actually - supports - the stock.

Excellent point. I’m dying to know what it’s like in 10 years when the company has zero interest in supporting the so-software-centric early S, X and 3. Once a car is in a fender bender it’s going to basically be worthless...
